Steampunk Musician – Research
For the first stage in this assignment I have picked the
theme of steampunk and the descriptor of a musician. I have started by
researching into the theme of steampunk and how it could be shown throughout
musical instruments, people and just generally gathering ideas for a steampunk
musician. Below are mood boards showing these ideas.
I have made two mood boards above, one about musical
instruments and the other about steampunk people. I have picked all of these
images to reference whilst creating my 2D concepts of a steampunk musician. My
plan for creating my 2D concepts is too experiment with both a guitar and a
piano for the instruments as they seem to be the easiest to incorporate the
steampunk theme into. For the musician himself he will look steam punky but
also needs to look like a musician, so when he/she is on the piano they will be
wearing smart clothes like a tuxedo or when he/she is playing a guitar they
could be casual steampunk as well as very rocky type of steampunk which will be
great to experiment with.
I have picked out these steampunk
colours here so I get a rough idea of the materials used in steampunk
environments, people etc. I hope to try to incorporate these colours into the
concepts but it’s not my main priority.
The theme
of steampunk is very popular in modern day culture with cafes being steampunk
themed, in fashion steampunk is very popular as well as in games and films. The
main point in steampunk is to show off the Victorian era and how it would have
looked like in the future within a steam powered or post-apocalyptic world.
There are various types of
steampunk there is not just one type of steampunk. Most characters and
environments are all different within their styles so whilst making my concepts
I will be sure to make all of the styles different, as throughout my mood board
all of the steampunk characters are different.
My Rules:
There are currently lots of
steampunk musicians and bands.
Some include Abney Park, Steam
powered giraffe and Frenchy and the punk.
My Rules:
Rule 1: Has to be an older person. Elderly man or woman
Rule 2: Has to wear some sort of head gear (like a top hat)
Rule 3: Musical
instrument has to be steampunk themed (not just the musician)
Throughout this first stage I hope
to make many concepts from the genre and descriptor to the best of my ability
with quick sketches and long concepts.
Concepts:
Here are some of my concepts that I have created I like how I have incorporated small easy sketches and then gone onto make more detailed concepts of my chosen theme and descriptor. I did find this quite challenging but also fun to experiment with two random genres and descriptors.
Within the images I have made little notes of maybe what colours they would be, If they follow my rules well etc.

ReplyDelete1. I think that you did well on adding detail to your characters and picking out key features.
2. the research that you was very detailed and gave you relative information .
cons -
1.maybe make the draw a little but apart from there was nothing else that I could think that needed improving.
I can not find my week one comment again on blogger so I have to re type it up now. The research is good a lot of detail to information and you really went in to depth about musicians and the theme Steampunk. Improvements would be to use a tracing method to make more drawings faster so that you have more drawings in less time.
ReplyDeleteI like the concept art that you produce , I also like that you add more detail to certain parts of the of the character , the research was good also . the use of a colour scheme was also interesting and I think this help later on when designing and adding colour to your characters. over all I think that your design for your character are good for your first weeks work.
